Causes Of Bad Breath (And How To Eliminate It)

No one wants it but it’s worse to have it and not know that you have bad breath. Having bad breath is an issue we’ve all encountered at one point in our life. Whether we are the culprits or the victim, it’s a condition most people hope not to experience because it can be very embarrassing. 

Bad breath or also known as halitosis is a common problem but can be preventable. So, what are the causes of bad breath? There are no definite data on the percentage of the population of people having bad breath but studies show that almost 80% of bad breath comes from an oral source. For example, cavities, tonsils, cracked filling, and dirty dentures can cause bad breath. There are also other causes of bad breath which includes:

  • Food

There are foods that can leave a lingering smell. Often times, the odor is short-lived but those foods that get stuck on your teeth can promote bacterial growth and dental plaques which can cause bad breath. To prevent it from happening, always brush your teeth. And remember to brush after eating foods with stronger odors such as garlic, onions and meaty meals. 

  • Smoking

Smoking can cause bad breath because of the components found in tobacco products. Aside from bad breath, smoking will result to building up of tartar, discoloration of your teeth, and gum disease. If you are a smoker, consider withdrawing from smoking if you want to treat your bad breath.

  • Bad oral and dental hygiene

When you don’t brush your teeth and you have dry mouth, then you are most at risk of having bad breath. Every time we eat, food particles that get stuck in between our teeth and remains in our mouth. If we don’t remove them through brushing and flossing, then it will cause bad breath. Always practice good dental hygiene and visit your dentist regularly. Also, remember to hydrate yourself.

  • Medications

There are medications, especially the prescriptions medicines, that cause dry mouth as a side effect. Dry mouth happens when your salivary gland produces insufficient saliva. Thus, making your mouth a good place for thriving bacteria. You cannot stop taking your medications in order to treat your bad breath. So the best thing you can do with this is to keep yourself as hydrated as possible. 

  • Tooth decay and infections in your mouth

Another common cause of bad breath is a surgical wound in your mouth which has not healed such as wound from a tooth extraction. Tooth decay also causes bad breath due to the bacteria thriving in the decayed tooth. Once the decayed tooth is extracted and the wound is healed, with proper oral hygiene, your bad breath will go away.
